We are introduced to God as Creator in the first sentence of the Bible: “Bereshiet bara Elohim” (“In the beginning God created”). But the Almighty’s relationship with His creation certainly doesn’t end there on the very first page.

Moses witnessed God defeat the enemies of the Hebrew people. He celebrated God, recognizing Him as more than the King of the Hebrews but the King over all. Moses knew that God was the one who appointed and deposed Kings.

The Hebrew word for fortress refers to an impregnable stronghold, usually high up on a mountain. David, of all people, was familiar with such places. As a shepherd boy, he often had to seek out safe refuges for his flock.


Have you ever found yourself placing your hope in something other than God? Most of us have said, “Once I get that promotion, everything will be okay,” or “If I could just get healthy, that would fix everything,” or “When we move, then I’ll be happy.”

People who lived before the advent of electricity took great care of their lamps. A lamp was a prized possession. It made life easier—and safer. With a lamp you could check on your children and your animals at night.

Every hit movie or great novel features the proverbial “plot twist.” You’re sitting there munching on your popcorn, when suddenly the story veers off in a direction you never imagined.

When you need to clean out an underground cellar or a dark closet, what you need most is light. Aren’t you thankful for light bulbs, electricity, and flashlights?

Imagine a tent full of Boy Scouts with only one flashlight to share. Midnight hikes to the outhouse would surely turn into comical adventures as all those scouts try to follow one small beam of light down a dark path.

“Lawyer up.” That’s the counsel usually given to people charged with a crime. “Don’t say anything without an attorney present!” From real life to TV shows, we all know a competent lawyer is a blessing. Good lawyers know the law’s technicalities and loopholes.

After the fundamental question of life, “Does God exist?” comes the closely related question, “If there is a God, what is God like?” In a conversation with an unnamed Samaritan woman, Jesus answered the question this way: “God is spirit.”

One of the great titles of God is “the Holy One of Israel.” It’s a name that tells us a lot about our Maker, and a name worth exploring.The word holy is found 625 times in the New International Version of the Bible. It means literally “to cut” or “to separate.”

When the Bible refers to God as “the horn of my salvation,” it sounds strange to our twenty-first-century ears. What kind of horns are we talking about here? Car horns? Antlers? Trumpets?

The little girl is exhausted and scared. It has been a week since the earthquake destroyed her home in Haiti, separating her from everyone she knows. Her face is dirty and wet with tears. Her dress is torn, and she is hungry.

When we describe God as the God who hates, don’t we validate all the critics who insist that God is an angry God—the ones who claim that God is unreliable, unstable, even unrighteous?

Isaiah introduced the idea of God as Sar-Shalom (Isaiah 9:6) revealing that God Himself is peace and also the giver of peace. Real life, rich life, abundant life—the life we want—is found only in Him.
