In the winepress the grapes were trampled. The grapes were placed in the winepress, which was a receptacle from which a tube emerged that carried the juice of the crushed grapes to another receptacle that was next to it.
In the excavations, places have been found that were evidently used for these purposes: they are excavated in the rock with a shallow channel through which the juice flowed (Judg. 6:11; Neh. 13:15; Jb. 24:11 ; Is. 5:2; 63:2; Mr. 12:1; etc.). In Egypt, grapes were pressed inside a bag that was tightened by twisting.
Symbolically, the winepress is used as a figure of the execution of God's judgments; people, like grapes, are put into the winepress, and crushed there: "and out of the winepress came blood to the bridles of the horses, for sixteen hundred furlongs" (about the extent of Palestine) (Rev. 14:19, 20 ; 19:15).
