In ancient cities the streets were generally narrow and winding. They were called by their most outstanding characteristic and, thus, there were streets called "wide", "straight", "middle", "old", etc. (Ezra 10:13; Pr. 7:8; Jer. 6:11; Acts 9:11; 12:10).
There were streets made solely for the transit of people, and there were those specialized in a certain type of occupation or trade; Thus there was that of carpenters, that of jewelers, that of bakers, etc. (Jer. 37:21).
