Name of uncertain meaning: it could mean "embrace" or designate "a garden plant" (cf. the ac. "hambakûkû").
Prophet of Judah. From his psalm (Hab. 3), and from the instructions given to his choir director (Hab. 3:19), it has been concluded that Habakkuk belonged to the tribe of Levi; but this passage does not constitute a demonstration of this in an absolute way (cf. the titles of Ps. 3 and 5).
This could be why the apocryphal writing of "Bel and the Dragon" bears the heading "Habakkuk, son of Joshua, of the tribe of Levi."
