According to Genesis 11, mankind had one single language. Filled with pride, some of those chose to build a tower “whose top is in the heavens” (v. 4).
God took notice, went down, and “[confused] their language” (v. 7). Not being able to understand one another anymore, the builders scattered. By coincidence, “Babel” sounds a lot like “babble.”
