President Lincoln was a devoted Bible reader. He claimed the Bible moved him to issue his Emancipation Proclamation, freeing America’s slaves, in 1863. He noted especially the words of Exodus 6:5: “I [God] have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians keep in bondage” (KJV).
