Carnivorous, wild and ferocious animal (Is. 11:6; Hab. 1:8), which seeks out sheep to kill them (Sir. 13:17; Jn. 10:12). He sleeps by day and prowls by night (Zeph. 3:3).
Benjamin is compared to a ravening wolf. Heb.: "zeeb." In a figurative sense, the comparison with the wolf denotes skill and violence. E.g., criminal princes (Ex. 22:27); false prophets (Mt. 7:15; Acts 20:29); enemies of God's people (Mt. 10:16).
The Palestine wolf (quite abundant) is a variety of the European species, "canis lupus." The Palestinian butcher does not hunt in packs, but alone, because it finds easy prey, since the winter is milder than in northern countries. The wolf belongs to the canid family, but it does not bark: it howls.
