TOWER
(a) The keeper of the vineyards had only a hut (Isa. 1:8), but the owner often found it necessary to build a tower to defend his possession against marauders (Isa. 5:2; Mt. 21: 33; Mark 12:1).
There were towers that became true fortresses, for the protection of shepherds in the confines of the deserts (2 Kings 17:9; 2 Chron. 26:10). The fortifications of the cities included them (2 Chron. 14:6; Neh. 3:1), flanking the city gates (2 Chron. 26:9).
Sentinels and war machines were placed in them (2 Kings 9:17; 2 Chron. 26:15) and, when the enemy approached, the inhabitants took refuge in the towers (Judg. 9:51, 52; Ps. 61 :3, 4), from where they could launch projectiles with ease.
