TORCH
They were used in ancient times by all peoples as instruments of illumination, and also by the Hebrews (Gen. 15:17; Jn. 18:3). They were sometimes used in battles and in sieges of cities (Zech. 12:6).
They were made of resinous materials, generally plants or bitumen derivatives. The so-called brands were especially those used for warrior purposes (Judg. 6:16, 20; 15:4); It is also used in a symbolic sense to indicate spiritual illumination (Jn. 5:35; 2 Pet. 1:19; Is. 62:21).
