TIMNA, TIMNAH

TIMNA, TIMNAH

“allocated portion.”
(a) A city on the border of Judah, not far from Beth-shemesh (Josh. 15:10). Later attributed to Dan (Josh. 19:43).

In Samson’s time it was occupied by the Philistines (Judg. 14:2). They lost it, but regained it in the time of Ahaz (2 Chron. 28:18). Identified with Tibnah, 5 km west-southwest of Beth-shemesh, 25 km from Jerusalem, in the same direction, and 26 km east of Ashdod.

(b) City in the hill country of Judah (Josh. 15:57); probably the place mentioned in Gen. 38:12-14; near a place called Gabaa, and met with Adullam and Enaim.

6.5 km east of Beit Netiff is a town called Tibnah, on a slope that rises in the direction of el-Khader; Nearby, to the southeast, is Jeba’, which confirms the biblical data.
