SPEAR

SPEAR

This weapon, in Heb. “h’nith” consisted of an iron spike fixed to a pole (1 Sam. 13:19; 17:7; Is. 2:4). When the warrior was not using this type of javelin, he planted it in the ground (1 Sam. 18:10, 11; 26:7, 8; 2 Sam. 2:23; John 19:34).

It was a thrown weapon that could also be used to directly wound melee. The Hebrews also used a kind of spear called “romah” (Judg. 5:8; 1 Chron. 12:8, 24; Neh. 4:13; Jer. 46:4), with which they pierced the adversary ( Num. 25:7, 8); it was not throwing (1 Kings 18:28).
