SOUTH

SOUTH

“wall”, “fortification”. Desert locality, south of Palestine, more exactly south of Beer-Lahai-Roi, and east of Egypt (Gen. 16:7; 25:18).

Sur, or Shur, which has not been identified, was surely in relation to the fortresses on the Egyptian frontier.

The town gave its name to the desert that the Israelites traveled for three days, immediately after crossing the Red Sea (Ex. 15:22). This wasteland is sometimes called the wilderness of Etam (Num. 33:8).
