God, as the righteous Judge of the earth, “will repay each man according to his works” (Rom. 2:6). Sinful man receives in himself "the recompense due to his error" in this very life (Rom. 1:27).
All who reject the gospel of God's grace will receive retribution from the Lord Jesus when he appears from heaven with his mighty angels (1 Thes. 1:8).
This retribution will be “the punishment of eternal destruction, excluded from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his power” (1 Thes. 1:9), fulfilling in a distressingly complete way the sentence that “the wages of sin is death.” (Rom. 6:23 a) for all those who have not come to Christ before to receive the gift of God, which "is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Rom. 6:23 b).
