City near the Euphrates (Num. 22:5), near the mountains of Aram (Mesopotamia) (Num. 23:7; Deut. 23:4).
Shalmansar II of Assyria captured Petor from the Hittites, and gave him the name Pitru.
In the list of Thutmose III of Egypt it is among the Syrian cities.
This city was located on the west bank of the Euphrates, near the Sagura River, which today bears the name of Sajur, a few kilometers south of Carchemish.
