LYDDA

LYDDA

Town 18 km southeast of Joppa (Acts 9:39; Ant. 20:6, 2). Lida is probably the Lod of the OT.

Shortly before the year 153 BC, the city and its territory had a private government, and were attached to Samaria; In the year 145 BC, this territory was attributed to Judea (1 Mac. 11:34; cf. 28; 10:30, 38).

The gospel was established there from the beginning. The apostle Peter, passing through Lydda, healed Aeneas, the paralytic. This healing triggered a large number of conversions to Jesus Christ (Acts 9:33-35).

Under Nero, Cestius burned Lyda, which was later rebuilt (Wars 2:19, 1).
