LIBATION OFFERING
It was generally not offered alone (but cf. Gen. 35:14). It was offered with the morning and evening sacrifice, which was a burnt offering, and was accompanied by an oblation of vegetable offerings.
It consisted of wine, and the amount was variable, in relation to the animal offered (Num. 28:14). “You shall pour out a libation of superior wine before Jehovah in the sanctuary” (Num. 28:7).
In the land of Canaan a libation should be offered to sweet-smelling oblations. The amount of wine and oil had to be equal, and in proportion to the importance of the victim (Num. 15:1-11).
The libation may be a type of joy in the Spirit in the awareness of the value of Christ’s work done to the glory of God (cf. Phil. 2:17, which may be an allusion to the libation offering).
