JOIADA
“Jehovah has known.”
(a) Father of Benaiah, one of David’s mighty men (2 Sam. 8:18; 1 Kings 1:8-44, etc.). In 1 Chron. 27:5 he is called “high priest,” so it is possibly identical to section c.
(b) High priest during the usurpation of Athaliah. He preserved the life of Joash, the youngest son of Ahakiah, who was then one year old, and managed, with prudence and energy, to put him on the throne, having Athaliah executed.
It is recorded that Joash did what was right in the sight of the Lord all the days of Jehoiada; However, when the priest died, the king forgot everything he owed him, and killed Zechariah his son (2 Kings 11:4-17; 12:2, 7, 9; 2 Chron. 22:11; 23 :1-18; 24:2-25).
(c) Chief of the Aaronites (or “prince of Aaron”) who came to David at Hebron (1 Chr. 12:27).
(d) Son of Benaiah and one of David’s counselors (1 Chron. 27:34).
(e) Son of Paseah, he repaired the Old Gate of Jerusalem (Neh. 3:6).
(f) Priest mentioned by the false prophet Shemaiah in his letters against Jeremiah (Jer. 29:26).
