JOAQUIN

JOAQUIN

“God will establish.”
Son and successor of Jehoiakim on the throne of Judah; He began to reign in the year 597 BC. According to 2 Kings 24:8 he was then 18 years old, while 2 Chron. 36:9 indicates 8 years old.

This divergence is found in the LXX and in the Masoretic text. This is explained by assuming that JoaquĆn was associated with his father in the kingdom for ten years, and that he reigned alone from the age of 18.

His reign lasted three months and ten days, doing evil in the sight of the Lord. During this brief period of time, the generals of the king of Babylon besieged Jerusalem, and the city surrendered (cf. 2 Kings 24:12; cf. Jer. 52:28).

Joachim was deported with his wives, his mother, the king’s servants, all the dignitaries of the country and all the artisans (2 Kings 24: 8-16; 2 Chron. 36: 9, 10).

Jehoiachin was imprisoned in Babylon, but in the 37th year of his exile Evil-merodach acceded to the throne of Babylon and freed Jehoiachin, assigning him a pension for life (2 Kings 25: 27-30; Jer. 52: 31-34 ). He is called Coniah and Jeconiah in the writings of Jeremiah.
