JASPER
(Heb. “yashepheh”; Gr. “iaspis”).
It is not identified with modern jasper, which is an opaque variety of quartz of many different colors. It is unknown which stone the Scripture refers to. Some think it could be the diamond.
In Rev. 21:11 it is described as “clear as crystal.”
It was part of the high priest’s breastplate (Ex. 28:20; 39:13).
One of the stones from the cover of the symbolic king of Tire in Eden (Ez. 28:13).
The One sitting on the throne in heaven “was like a jasper stone…” (Rev. 4:3).
It is the first foundation of the heavenly Jerusalem (Rev. 21:19).
