JACKAL

JACKAL

(Heb. “tannim” and “tannoth”).
According to Lm. 4:3 it is a mammal.

Isaiah 35:7 and 43:20 show the jackal dwelling in the desert.
According to Is. 34:13, 14; Jer. 49:33; 51:37, he makes his dens in the ruins.

He hunts in packs, and feeds on carrion; If there is opportunity, he snatches children and devours them.

The jackal emits a cry nothing like that of wolves or dogs, animals to which it resembles, and together with those it is classified in the genus “Canis” (cf. Mi. 1:8).
