JABEZ

JABEZ

Tributary of the Jordan on its eastern slope. Jacob forded it upon returning from Mesopotamia (Gen. 32:22). It was born near Rabá de Amón (modern Amman). From there it flows for more than 19 km towards the northeast, then turning towards the northwest, maintaining this direction for 24 km.

Then it runs for about 27 km through a valley that separates Gilead from Ammon. It flows into the Jordan about 69 km south of the Sea of Galilee and 37 km north of the Dead Sea. The Jabbok is currently called Nahr ez-Zerkã.

Considered in the past as a border, the Jabbok separated the Ammonites from the kingdom of Sihon the Amorite, and later from the tribe of Gad.
