JA-ZER

JA-ZER

“Fortified.”
Gilead city and district. It was taken by the Israelites from the Amorites, assigned to Gad, and given to the Levites (Num. 21:32; 32:1, 3, 35; Josh. 13:25; 21:39; 1 Chron. 6:81; Isaiah 16:8, 9).

In Jer. 48:32 the “sea of Jazer” appears to be due to the accidental repetition, by a copyist, of “sea” in the previous clause.
Judas Maccabeus captured it from the Ammonites and burned it (1 Maccabeus 5:7, 8; Ant. 12:8, 1).

Although no identification is certain, it could be Beit Zerah, 31° 50′ N, 35° 51′ E.
