IBIS
Bird of the ibida family that does not exist in the northern regions. About thirty different species have been found, of which only three are represented in Egyptian monuments.
The sacred ibis was venerated in Egypt as an incarnation of the god Thoth, and in the city of Hermopolis, dedicated to its cult, mummies of said bird have been found. It fed on snakes and other reptiles and crustacean mollusks.
The sacred ibis had a white body and a black head and tail. For the Hebrews, possibly because of their eating habits, it was an unclean bird (Lev. 11:17; Deut. 14:16). Some versions translate “owl.”
