HERODION
(a) Christian of Rome. His name seems to imply that he was a freedman belonging to the family of Herod, perhaps to the house of Aristobulus. Paul calls him “my kinsman” (Rom. 16:11).
(b) Fortress built by Herod the Great 6 km southeast of Bethlehem. It was part of a system of fortifications for the maintenance of garrisons that ensured his power.
Among them were also Masada, Machaerus and Alexandreion.
Herodion was the place chosen by Herod the Great for his burial (Ant. 17:9, 3).
