HERMAS
Christian from Rome, to whom Paul sends greetings (Rom. 16:14). Origen and others have expressed the opinion that he was one of the Apostolic Fathers, and author of the writing called “The Shepherd of Hermas”, which was appreciated in some sectors of the early church. It is a kind of allegory, and some have compared it to Bunyan’s “Pilgrim’s Progress.”
However, there are sections of The Shepherd that are very trivial, and others that are unseemly. Certainly, there is a notable difference with the writings of the New Testament. The opinion of Origen and those who follow this identification is a mere conjecture without any basis. The name Hermas was very common.
