GEZER
“precipice”.
Ancient city of the Canaanites adjacent to Ephraim (1 Chr. 7:28) and given to the Levites (1 Chr. 6:62-67).
The Ephraimites committed the error of not expelling the Canaanites, leaving them as tributaries (Judg. 1:29).
It was one of the most important places in the Maccabean wars (apocryphal book 1 Mac. 9:52).
Identified with the modern Tel-el Dyeser.
A stone in the ruins bears the following inscription in Hebrew and Greek: “limit of Gezer.”
