“hot waters” (today Amonas).
A village 30 km west of Jerusalem (Luke 24:13, 29, 33).
Jerome places it where the mountains of Judah begin to rise.

During the siege of Jerusalem by Titus, the 5th Roman legion camped in its surroundings.
In the third century it took the name Nicopolis and was the seat of a bishopric.
