CUTA

CUTA

Biblical name of a city of Babylon, center of the idolatrous cult of the god Nergal (2 Kings 17:29-30).

Sargon II, king of Syria, expatriated the inhabitants of Cuta and distributed them in Samaria, thus giving rise to the mixture between the Jews and the inhabitants of Cuta (2 Kings 17:24-30).

Flavius Josephus also mentions the Cutites, who are cited in the Talmud (Antiquities of the Jews, 9:14, 3; 13:9, 1).
