(a) Eighth son of Jacob, his mother was Zilpah, Leah’s maid (Gen. 30:13). When Jacob called his sons around him to tell them what would happen to them at the end of days (Keil-Delitzsch), that is, the eschatological future related to the days of the Messiah: “The bread of Asher will be substantial, and he will give delight the king” (Gen. 49:1, 20).
(b) A city east of Shechem, on the road to Beth Shean, in Manasseh, on the west bank of the Jordan (Josh. 17:7).
