AMRAPHEL
King of Shinar (the depressed alluvial plain south of Babylon), ally of Chedorlaomer, king of Elam, in the invasion of the region south of the Dead Sea, in the time of Abraham.
In the course of this expedition Lot was taken prisoner, but later freed when Abraham defeated them (Gen. 14).
The identification that had been made between Amraphel and Hammurabi the Great has been delayed by the archaeological discovery of the “Letters of Mari”, which assign Hammurabi’s reign to a later date, later than that of Abraham.
