Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson (1824–1863)

The revered Confederate general was a devout Christian, a deacon, and a Sunday school teacher before the Civil War began. Jackson was noted for praying before battles and for his aversion to fighting on Sundays. The saintly man was also an incredibly ferocious fighter. Before one battle, he announced to his men, “The blessed God, the God of the Bible, is the God of peace, but for now we ask His blessing upon our battle.”
