According to Jesus’ words in the Gospels, only one sin is unpar-donable: “Every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men” (Matt. 12:31).
People puzzle over what “blasphemy against the Spirit” might mean ( and many sensitive souls have asked themselves, “What if I committed the unpardonable sin without meaning to?”).
The meaning, so far as we can be certain, seems to be an ongoing hardening of the heart against God—or, possibly, attributing the works of God to Satan.
If this second interpretation is correct, then many people who encountered Jesus were guilty of blasphemy against the Spirit, for some of His enemies did attribute His miracles to the power of Satan.
