The Bible has a lot to say about the harm done by gossiping and lying, and one of the Ten Commandments forbids bearing false witness against someone.
The classic statement on the harm done by a vicious tongue is in James 3:8. James notes that man can tame every type of creature, “But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.”
