Evangelists (capital E ) refers to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, authors of the four Gospels. Because each of them presented to the world the “good news” of Jesus (the Greek word is euangelos, meaning “good news” but usually translated “gospel”), each is called Evangelist. Artworks sometimes refer to them as St. John the Evangelist, St. Mark the Evangelist, and so on.
