Acts 12 records the persecution of Christians by the violent ruler Herod. He killed the apostle James, and had Peter imprisoned for a time.
But a dire fate awaited Herod himself. Appearing in his royal robes and given an eloquent speech before a crowd, Herod made such an impression that the people yelled, “The voice of a god and not of a man!” Perhaps Herod’s ego had swelled too big: “Then immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and died” (Acts 12:23).
