They were and still are a major order of nuns and monks in the Catholic church. The order was founded on the biblical Mount Carmel (see 901) by Europeans in 1154, but the Carmelites claimed they were descendants of the band of prophets that followed Elijah. When the Holy Land was occupied by the Muslims, the Carmelites went to Europe.
