Alexander Campbell (1788–1866) and his father were pastors on the American frontier.
They were disturbed at how denominations seemed to compete with each other, so they called for a restoration of New Testament Christianity, dropping all the denominational differences and emphasizing the simple faith of the first Christians.
The descendants of the “Campbellites” did, nonetheless, become denominations: the Disciples of Christ and the Churches of Christ. The Churches of Christ have been the more conservative group, sticking close to the Bible in their worship practices.
