Often called the “Moonies” after founder Sun Myung Moon, the Unification Church is officially called the Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity.
Moon, a Korean, claimed that Jesus appeared to him on Easter 1936 and told him to establish the kingdom of God on earth. Although the church is theoretically Christian, Moon’s book Divine Principle diverges in many ways from the Bible. Moon has claimed to have communicated with Moses, Jesus, and Buddha, and to be able to “travel in the spirit world.”
