Praying silently is a standard procedure today. But in Bible times, most people prayed aloud, even when they were along. Hannah, who gave birth to the great leader Samuel, was accused of being drunk by the priest Eli when he saw her praying silently: Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk and scolded her. Hannah replied that she was not drunk but merely pouring out her soul to the Lord (1 Sam. 1:9–15).
