The name comes from Shem, one of Noah’s three sons. Shem was the ancestor of Abraham, who became the ancestor of the Israelites. Anthropologists use “Semites” to refer to a group of ancient people with related languages, including the Hebrew, Canaanites, Assyrians, Babylonians, and Arabs.
