In New Testament times, experts in Jewish law were called “scribes” (or “teachers of the Law” or “lawyers” in some transla-tions).
Jesus had harsh words for them, because they (like the Pharisees) were fastidious about adhering to the rules but often forgot the importance of genuinely loving God and other people.
They were respected by the people, but Jesus saw that they could be self-righteous and hypocritical, with a religion of rules instead of serving God (Matt. 23; Luke 20). The scribes looked down on Jesus for mixing with the common people and social outcasts.
