Wise, wealthy King Solomon took Israel to its political peak, but he was a notorious taxer and spender.
After his death, his arrogant son Rehoboam announced that he would not lighten the tax load: In fact, he said he would add to their burden—after all, his little finger was thicker than his father’s waist (1 Kings 12:10)!
The kingdom split in two, with the ten northern tribles following Jeroboam, a former official of Solomon, in setting up the splinter kingdom of Israel.
Rehooboam’s kingdom, Judah, consisted only of the two tribes of Judah and Benjamin. Jeroboam had the larger, more prosperous chunk of land, but the Lord’s temple was in Jerusalem, in Judah.
To keep his people from having to travel there, Jeroboam set up worship centers with golden calf idols at Dan and Bethel.
