The word occurs hundreds of times in the Bible, and in some parts of the Old Testament it ought to be taken with a grain of salt.
While we think of a king as the ruler of a fairly large nation, many of the “kings” in the Bible (particularly in Genesis) were nothing more than petty rulers of small tribes—more like “chieftains” than “kings” in the usual sense.
