John Locke (1632–1704)

America’s Founding Fathers were influenced by the Bible, but also deeply influenced by English philosopher Locke, particularly his Second Treatise on Government.

Locke also wrote a widely read book on religion, The Reasonableness of Christianity. Locke considered himself an orthodox Christian, but he downplayed the supernatural elements of the Bible without denying they were true. He was a powerful influence on the Enlightenment (see 583).
