A “Jezebel” is, says Webster’s, “an impudent, shameless, or abandoned woman.” Jezebel was the wife of wicked King Ahab of Israel, and a dedicated worshiper of the false god Baal.
She encouraged her husband in leading Israel away from God, and her chief opponent was the faithful prophet Elijah. After a showdown between Elijah and Baal’s prophets (Elijah won), Jezebel vowed to kill him. Elijah wisely fled.
God anointed Jehu to wipe out Ahab’s Baal-worshipping clan. Knowing she was about to meet her doom, Jezebel painted her eyes, arranged her hair, and looked out a window.
Jehu ordered two servants to throw her from the window. They did, and when they went to bury her, they found nothing except her skull, her feet, and her hands. She had been eaten by dogs (2 Kings 9:30–37).
