Long before the word referred to the Nazis’ extermination of Jews, it meant a burnt offering, a ritual sacrifice in which the whole animal is burned on the altar (Lev. 1). In other offerings, only portions of the animal were consumed by fire. The Greek word holokaustos means “burnt whole.”
