This familiar Hebrew word of praise means, “praise the LORD.” It occurs many times in the Psalms (usually as “praise the LORD” instead of “hallelujah”), and it made its way into Greek (which has no letter H ) as Alleluia. It does not appear in the New Testament until Revelation, notably in 19:6: “Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!” Handel set it to beautiful music as the “Hallelujah Chorus” in his Messiah.
