Some churches follow the custom of members washing each other’s feet. This is based on John’s gospel, chapter 13, in which Jesus washes His disciples’ feet and tells them they should continue the practice. Footwashing was a gesture of hospitality in that era of sandals, mud, and dust. It was normally done by a servant, so Jesus used it as a symbol of His followers serving one another.
