A former shoe salesman who was never ordained, Moody became one of America’s best-known evangelists, also taking his crusades to Britain. Preaching in a simple, homey style, Moody won millions of converts, aided by his music director, Ira D. Sankey. In an era when liberals and conservatives fought over interpreting the Bible, Moody managed to steer clear of controversy.
Moody was involved in charitable work, particularly in his base city, Chicago. He founded the Chicago Evangelization Society, later known as the Moody Bible Institute, which publishes Moody Magazine.
On one occasion Moody said, “I know the Bible is inspired because it inspires me.”
