Boston preacher Henry Ward Beecher was the brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of the famous antislavery novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Beecher preached love for God and man, but when it came to fighting slavery, he was willing to support violence. He and his followers shipped crates of rifles to Kansas, which had bloody conflicts between antislavery and pro-slavery forces. Beecher sneakily shipped the rifles in crates marked “Bibles,” but in time people figured out what “Beecher’s Bibles” really were.
